This is your opportunity to shine in front of the model agency and distinguish yourself in a room full of other models. Yes, all eyes are on you. Yes, it is nerve-wracking. Yes, it is intimidating. That's why preparation and confidence are key to unlocking your dreams.
What's the difference between Casting Call and Open Call?
Clients that need models hold casting calls, where they invite models that fit their requirements and have them appear in person so that they can see who would be the best fit for the job. The models bring their portfolio so that the client can see their work experience.
Open Calls are held by modeling agencies who open their doors to model hopefuls to potentially sign them — no appointment necessary. This is a great opportunity to meet face-to-face with top agencies.
You know what type of model you are/want to be, you have developed digitals and a portfolio and have done research on the modeling agency you'd like to sign with. Boom, they post on their Instagram "Open Call, Friday starting at 1 pm till 5 pm, location 123 Avenue".
What do I wear?
Simple, tight-fitted clothing would be ideal when attending both an open and casting call. Modeling agencies want to see your physical features and attributes. A neutral-colored sleeveless top or t-shirt is great. Skinny/fitted jeans will accentuate your legs. Keep the color dark, preferably black denim. Always wear nude colored undergarments to avoid distracting patterns. A strapless bra will avoid any droopy or folded straps.
Heels are the cherry on top of your outfit. A pair of pumps in nude, black, or grey are ideal. A 3-4 inch heel will aid in stability while demonstrating your fierce runway walk. To avoid blisters, bring a pair of sandals with you when outside the building.
How should I do my makeup/hair?
Not to sound redundant, but again, a simple look. Modeling agencies want to see you in your most natural state. A natural look can be a light concealer, natural cream blush, and chapstick. It's a refreshed and clean natural makeup look. The goal is to be a clean canvas for the modeling agency.
Pull your hair back so that your beautiful face can be seen by the modeling agency. A clean ponytail or bun would suffice.
Remember your research.
You want to ensure you fit the height/weight/measurement requirements on the modeling website before you attend the casting/open call. Understand the values and message of the agency. Be well versed in their history, fashion trends, influential people, and ultimately yourself. Have a canned script prepared. In other words, an elevator pitch on why you are the best fit to sign.
What questions can I expect?
The following is a list of questions asked to models in an interview:
Tell us about yourself: Why do you want to work as a model? Why are you interested in this career?
Tell us about your education: Have you attended fashion modeling courses? What related courses or studies have you taken?
Why would you think you’re fit to be a model?
What are your goals as a model? How do you see yourself progress in this field?
How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements?
Do you eat nutritiously? How often do you exercise or go to the gym?
What do you hope to accomplish at our modeling agency?
Do you have any limitations? Would you model any kind of clothing at all?
State your availability: would you travel? Work full-time, part-time? Any hours?
A mistake that I have done at an open call, was not practicing or preparing for questions like these. I overhead the other model's answers in the waiting room and replicated them when I was called in. I did not differentiate myself but felt the need to "fit in" when you need to stand out!
Remember to be authentic, confident, and embrace the natural you. You can prepare to be a model not only in front of a camera but at home. This involves your physical and mental health.
