Handling Rejection

Emilly Marrero

In this business and many others, you may get more no's than yes's. It is a part of the journey to success in your field. Can you handle the no? Is the rejection going to cause you to end your journey or will it propel you to get that yes?

First, it's important to understand why you received that no. As a model, your look matters to the client. See it from the client's or agency's perspective. Are you the face they want for the brand or product? It's okay if your look wasn't for them. There will be a time when you are exactly what they are looking for.

This is a business, do not take rejection personally. Take the overthinking, doubt, and comparison out the window. Most of the time, there will be no explanation of the no. There simply is no callback. That's when you get back up and try again. Don't let a no stop you from knocking on doors of opportunity until one opens for you. In the case of a client explaining why they didn't choose you, accept that information and learn from it. Whether it is a blunt critique, take it as constructive.

Having a constructive mindset will help you handle rejection. Apply the feedback from those who are experienced. A no means that you are trying and you are working towards your dream. Actively seek the yes, and actively seek the no's. Think of it as a checklist. Who will I make known to my face? Who will I make known to my name? Who will I make known my talent? Remember you are developing experience, developing skills, and developing yourself.

Handle rejection with professionalism and grace. Most of the time agencies and clients know each other. If you are constantly retaliating against their no's with attitude and negativity, the word will spread. Modeling is about networking as previously discussed. What reputation are you putting before you?

The biggest models and celebrities we know and love today received rejections in their careers. Imagine if they had decided to give up? Imagine if they let the no's damage their confidence, passion, dreams, and self-worth? We would have never been able to cherish their impact and art given to the world.

Don't let rejection diminish your light. Accept the rejection and know that your yes is coming like the sun over the horizon. Remember, a flower won't bloom unless you water it. It won't blossom overnight either, so be patient with it and don't give up on it.
