Hello and welcome to the very first blog in this series! To kick it off, let me help answer this question for you. You may be a beginner model or simply interested in the model life or should I say behavior.
There are 10 categories in modeling, where you can express and create differently. It may be intimidating to choose one, but after reading through their descriptions, that choice can be easier.
Fashion models, or what the industry refers to as "editorial models," are high-fashion models that you see in magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Elle, and they usually work for top fashion labels such as Armani, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Valentino, and others.
Female editorial models are generally at least 5 feet, 9 inches tall, and very slim, with measurements that are usually around 33 inches around the bust, 23 inches around the waist, and 33 inches around the hips.
2. Runway Model
A person who poses to display clothing by walking along a narrow stage in front of an audience.
Runway models must have precise measurements so they're able to fit the clothes that designers are going to be showing to their clients. Their measurements are usually no greater than 34 inches around the bust, 23 inches around the waist, and 34 inches around the hips.
Swimsuit and lingerie models specialize in making people want to purchase newly released styles of swimsuits, bras, underwear, and lingerie.
Most agency models work in this category. Commercial models work many
different jobs, including the following: print advertisements, catalogs, campaigns, television shows, magazines, trade shows, and much more. There are no height or size requirements to be a commercial model.
Fitness models are toned, in shape, healthy, and have good muscle tone. There are no size/height requirements, but you MUST be in shape! There are modeling agencies with “fitness modeling” departments. Fitness models seeking representation should focus on these first, but fitness models can also be self-represented.
6. Parts Model
These models typically model their “parts”, such as their hands, legs, feet, stomach, etc. There are modeling agencies that represent parts models, and the best way to get started in this modeling category is by finding an agent rather than attempting to freelance.
Brands and companies often use promotional models to promote their products or services to their target consumers through face-to-face marketing, also known as live marketing. Face-to-face marketing can include experiential marketing, trade shows, and conventions, promotional events, corporate events, publicity stunts, and more.
The primary responsibilities of a promotional model are to serve as an extension of the brand or company, interact and engage with consumers, promote products or services, and most of all, make a lasting and positive brand impression on the consumer.
A glamour model is confident and comfortable showing off their body and can seduce the camera and audience through their poses and facial expressions.
Glamour modeling is a different type of modeling where the models are promoting themselves rather than a product or service. You can see glamour models posing in magazines like Playboy, Maxim, and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.
9. Print Model
Print models are often found in magazines, billboards, campaigns, booklets, flyers, and posters. These models usually have clear skin and a nice smile. While some of these models are selling a product, others are simply photographed based on the needs of the client.
10. Fit Model
A fit model is a model who works behind the scenes and helps fashion houses get the sizing and fit right before the garment is sent off to be manufactured. Fit models are a diverse group in terms of body shape since there’s a need for fit models to represent every size a garment comes in.
Each category has its own requirements and extra details when it comes to the job. It's a matching game where both you and the client can flourish. Next in this series will be how to create your portfolio. A major key in your representation and work!
